Natural Ways to Keep Fleas off your Dog

It’s healthy for pets to spend time walking, running, and playing outside, but this does pose some dangers. After all, outside is where all the fleas are, and they are just waiting to hitch a ride home on your pet to make his or her life miserable.

does your dog have fleasMany pet owners immediately turn to medications to help them deal with the flea problem, but this is not a great idea for a couple of reasons. Some animals might have allergies to the harsh chemicals or medicine, and it could disagree with them and actually make them sick. These types of treatments are usually expensive as well. Sometimes they do not even work. Rather than going through all of those problems, it makes more sense to find some natural ways that you might be able to rid your poor pooch of the flea infestation.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Vinegar can actually work quite well for your pet, and you have a couple of different ways that you can use it. First, you can put some into your dog’s water so that he or she ingests it. This will help to make the pet’s skin more acidic. Fleas do not like that, and they are more likely to leave, or to stay off your dog in the first place. If your dog will not drink water that has the vinegar in it, you can also put a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar, at a 50/50 ratio, into a spray bottle and spray your dog’s fur.

Lemon

Similar to the spray that you would make from the apple cider vinegar, the lemon spray can work quite well to keep fleas away from your dog. Cut a lemon into quarters and place some boiling water over them. Let them cool and sit overnight so they steep. You can then spray your dog with the mixture.

Whenever you are spraying your pet with any type of mixture, you have to be careful. You can spray the entire animal, but you have to take caution around the eyes. Get all of the other spots, including behind the ears, the base of the tail, the stomach, and the legs.

Green Products in the Store

You can also visit your pet store to see what type of green flea repellants they might have. They will usually have a few different options. It is a good idea to make sure that you read some reviews about the products before you choose them though, and make sure that you check their ingredients. If they are using chemicals that you can’t pronounce, the only thing green about them is their marketing campaign.

Your pets deserve to be happy, healthy, and flea free this summer. Take steps to make sure that your furry little friend has a great summer just like you.

I have a Sphynx cat and a furred cat who has fleas that I’m having a hard time getting under control. At least with my Sphynx I can see the fleas, nab them and flush them down the toilet. I slice one lemon in very thin slices, boil water, pour the water over it, and the next day after it’s cooled, use a cotton ball to dab the lemon all over. However, I’m thinking pouring it into a spray bottle would definitely work better. Also, with a Sphynx, they need to be bathed at least once a week, but wiping them with the lemon on a cottonball sure cleans a lot of that oil off, delaying bath day…and they smell good!

  2. I going to try the lemon spray…..
