Natural Flea and Tick Treatment to Protect Your Pets

Protecting your pet from fleas and ticks is something that most pet owners will have to address as summer approaches. Unless your animals live inside full time, they should be treated with flea and tick remedies, since these parasites can often carry diseases that may be harmful for your pet. Plus, you don’t want those insects crawling around your home, so it’s  best to take care of it in the beginning.

Choosing a Natural Flea and Tick Remedy for Your Pets

While there are many flea and tick treatments on the market, there are also many ways that you can help reduce the risk of your dog or cat getting fleas or a tick naturally through the use of healthy products and foods. Some of the following alternatives will help you treat your animals for parasites, and it will also help you avoid putting chemicals on your pet or paying for costly flea and tick treatment over the counter at your local vet.

Treating Fleas Naturally with Herbal Remedies

Herbal remedies exist in regards to treating fleas. In order to keep fleas off of your animals, you can purchase an herbal flea powder, and apply that to his/her coat sparingly. These herbal flea remedies naturally discourage parasites from attaching to your animals’ skin, and they are safe to use on all animals. Instead of a traditional flea collar, you may also consider an herbal flea collar to keep the parasites away and your dog or cat as healthy as possible. You can also use a flea comb to rid your animal of fleas.

Treating Ticks Naturally with Essential Oils

There are numerous ways that you can stop fleas and ticks from infesting your family pet, and one of these ways is to use tea tree oil, citronella, wintergreen, and eucalyptus on your dog’s coat. These are all safe ingredients that repel insects and parasites.  If you do see a tick on your pet, remove it promptly with tweezers and then burn it after you have made sure to remove the head. If you do not remove the head, the tick will regrow its body and will still continue pestering your pet and possibly your household.

Other Natural Treatments to Consider

Keep the home clean and vacuum often to ensure that fleas and their eggs cannot incubate in your carpets. Nutritional or brewer’s yeast may be helpful in staving off flea and tick attacks, and you can also add garlic. Natural skin tonic can be applied to your animal’s quote (sparingly) to prevent parasites from living on your pet. Many all natural foods have also been shown to help eliminate fleas and ticks on animals in the spring and summer. So other foods to consider giving your pet are barley grass concentrates, zinc, and raw garlic. If you are not sure how much to give your animals, contact your veterinarian before making a decision about how much to feed your pet. With all of these methods to control fleas and ticks without chemicals, you can ensure that your pet stays healthy and happy all year long.

    remember ticks can get you too and carry Lyme disease !
