Ways to Dress up Your Oatmeal
You can get almost any kind of oatmeal flavor out there, but many families are not liking the instant varieties. They want to go back and use plain old fashioned rolled oats. Yet they don’t have to be plain. They can be flavored by you in so many different ways.
Jellies and Jams
These are not just for biscuits and toast. Pick out any of your favorite flavors of jellies and jams and mix in a spoonful or two in your oatmeal. Leave it as a swirl to decorate it and then mix it in before you eat. It’s sweet and flavorful. This is really good with homemade jams and jellies.
Honey
This is a great natural sweetener. Not all honey tastes alike. It all depends on which flowers the bees used to make the honey. That makes it even more fun to experiment with honey in your oatmeal.
Brown Sugar
I love to eat my oatmeal with brown sugar in it. It tastes so good. It isn’t too sweet and can be combined with other ingredients just fine.
Granola
You can get extra sweetness, crunch, and texture when you add granola to your oatmeal. It is no longer oatmeal then. It becomes an entirely different meal.
Nuts
Just like granola, you can add so much to your oatmeal by putting pecans, almonds, or walnuts into your oatmeal. They can be raw, roasted, or salted. Even smoked almonds can be different. I’ve heard of people adding others or a mixture of them.
Syrup
I love maple syrup on pancakes, French toast, and in my oatmeal. I’ll even use blueberry syrup or other flavors. You can really have fun with this. Try making your own syrup at home and using it. Add flavors such as hazelnut. I’ve heard of someone who added coffee syrups to really give a variety in flavors.
Fresh and Dried Fruits
There is not much better than fresh peaches in the oatmeal. Add raisins, apples, bananas and berries. Dried or fresh, they are so tasty. It gives you more variety when you mix up the dried and the fresh with the different textures they have.
Spices
Cinnamon, nutmeg, and other bold spices are great in oatmeal. My son loves anything with cinnamon. So, it goes into his oatmeal every time.
Mix It Up
Want to really turn your plain oatmeal into something spectacular and not just better tasting? Mix these suggestions up. Yes, that’s what I said. Put granola and brown sugar in your oatmeal. Add cinnamon to it or not. Put in cinnamon and dried apples. Put in granola with your favorite jam. You could have oatmeal every day and never have the same tastes. What fun!
Oatmeal is healthy and easy to make. Cook up a batch for a large family and each one can have the flavor they want. You don’t have to buy boxes and boxes of specialized flavored pouches. You’re not limited. You’ve become the magician in the kitchen.
