Celebrate Summer With Bubble-Blowing Madness

Bubbles make me happy. Big bubbles, small bubbles, and especially kids running around with bubbles: these are the quintessential elements of summer. Add a sprinkler to the picture, and you’d be all set for the perfect summer afternoon of doing not too much.

If you and your kids also love bubbles, try out these wacky bubble ideas and keep on blowing, running, and catching these rainbow-colored orbs all summer long!

A Twist on the Classic Bubble Wand

Bubbles are fun and easyIf you buy bubble mix, you likely have a bubble wand. This shoots out little arrays of bubbles for your chasing pleasure. If you’d like to make your own wand in a different size or shape, it’s totally possible!

Get some wire and some large wooden beads. Give each child just under a foot of wire, and bend in in half. Reach halfway up the wire and twist the two sides together to make a loop. This is your bubble-blower. Add the big beads to the bottom half to make a sturdy handle. The beauty of this bubble wand is that you can change it into any shape you wish, just by pushing the wire around.

Looking for an even simpler twist on the classic bubble wand? At the craft store, you can buy packages of chenille stems or pipe cleaners. These twisty little pieces of metal are the perfect raw material for crafting bubble wands. Twist them into whatever shape you wish. As long as the shape is completely closed, you’ll make some bubbles!

Wacky Bubbles in a Cup

The toddler and preschooler set sometimes have a hard time puckering up to blow those little bubbles from the wands. This leads to mass bubble frustration. There’s nothing like a sticky, unhappy, bubble-mix-encrusted toddler! These bubbles in a cup won’t fix the mess, but they will provide a lot of fun times for your little and not-so-little kids.

Make sock bubbles by taking the small end off a plastic cup. Put a sock around the large end of the cup.  Make sure it’s very tight, so that it looks like a drum. Soak the sock end of the cup in bubble mix, then blow from the small end of the cup. Be prepared for a big train of tiny bubbles!

Get another cup and make some big bubbles! Cut the small end off this one too, and dip the big end in the bubble mix until there’s bubble mix stretched across the large end of the cup. Now, blow through the small end, and you’ll get big bubbles, no puckering up required.

Giant Bubbles

You love giant bubbles? Make some! Get two long pieces of light doweling, and attach a droopy string between either end at the top and bottom of the sticks. Place the whole contraption into the bubble mix, and take it out carefully. Then run! This will allow you to make a giant bubble. If you’d like to make a more modest-sized bubble, you can do the same thing with two straws instead of dowels, making a hand-sized bubble blower.

Got bubbles? You do now! I hope that you get blown away by your wacky bubbles this summer!
